Why Consistency Beats Customization in Fitness
You’re Not a Special Snowflake
In 2007, when I first began my personal training career, I was convinced that every client was a unique puzzle that required a completely tailored approach. I believed that to be an effective trainer, I needed to craft something unique for each person, meticulously tailored to their whims and perceived limitations. Every client was, in my mind, a special snowflake.
But what makes me a better trainer today is realizing that while each person has different goals and needs, they aren’t as unique as they might think. The truth is, the same set of trusted principles works for everyone, every time.
Busting the Myths
Have you ever said or heard any of these?
“I’ve tried everything, and nothing works.”
“My hormones make it impossible; my metabolism is broken.”
“It won’t work because I’m a… (too busy/shift worker/new parent).”
These statements all stem from self-limiting beliefs. When I hear these, I know that the biggest obstacle isn’t the person’s circumstances but their mindset. So, let’s take a closer look at what might be holding you back.
Are We Too Individualistic?
Especially in American culture, we love to feel unique. We live in an era of hyper-personalization, where everything from your music playlists to your shopping cart is curated just for you. In the fitness world, it’s no different—training programs, meal plans, and supplements are often tailored to your exact preferences and lifestyle.
While these personalized touches can be helpful, there’s a downside. You might start to believe that success hinges on having every detail perfectly aligned while losing sight of the big picture. The truth is, the basics done consistently are all you really need.
None of my clients needed advanced protocols or specialized diets to succeed. While I sometimes provide these as starting points, they’re not the key to transformation.
Shifting Your Mindset
The real transformation happens when you shift from thinking, “It won’t work for me,” to “I trust the plan, follow the steps, and tackle obstacles as they come up.” Once this mindset shift occurs, I hold my clients relentlessly accountable to the basics and support them every step of the way.
What Are Those Basics Again?
Here are the fundamentals that work for nearly everyone, regardless of individual differences:
Track what you eat.
Hit your daily protein and calorie goals.
Measure your steps and aim to move more every day.
Strength train two to three times a week.
Sleep six to eight hours a night.
Weigh yourself daily.
These simple, consistent habits are proven to work. The challenge isn’t in finding the right plan; it’s in sticking to it.
Keep It Simple
Regularly review your progress. Are you moving forward, or have you become bogged down in unnecessary details? A weekly or monthly progress photo, annual blood work, or simply reviewing your goals can help you stay on track. Simplify where needed and keep your eyes on the prize.
No two fitness journeys will be exactly the same, but don’t let self-imposed limitations prevent you from trusting that a consistent plan can—and will—work for you too!
